Have you ever visited a website and gotten really confused? How about not being able to find something? Maybe you were looking for someone’s contact information and there just wasn’t a navigation tab or link that led you to that page. It’s not an uncommon issue, but it’s one that can be seen over and over again throughout different websites.
A great website should allow users to easily navigate throughout the website. A simple and straightforward menu should help users know what pages you have on your site, which page they’re currently on, and which pages they have visited. The home page should also always be accessible at any one point, either by a “home” tab or by clicking on the company logo.
Navigation menus should also be consistent throughout the site. They should be the only part of your website that doesn’t change as you switch from page to page. Imagine if the same navigation menu appeared in different areas of the screen every time you got to a new page! That would be very confusing, and would cause site visitors to waste more time trying to find what they need. As a result, make sure you navigation menu is the one consistent component of your site that visitors can fall back upon if they want to look for something on your site.
Apart from having a good and consistent navigation menu, each link in your menu should also have a clear title that describes exactly what that page is about. If you have a link to an “About Us” page, call the link “About” or “About Us” instead of just “Company”. Don’t make your titles too long, but rather just clear enough to let visitors know where they are heading to when they click on that link in the navigation menu.
If you have many pages to link to, try organizing your menu so that they all fit nicely together. If you have some pages about company history, current team, mission statement, and company overview, it may be a good idea to group them all under a collective title called “About”. You can then have a dropdown menu that expands on each of these subcategories.
Remember, your site’s visitors are most important! Make their lives easier by cleaning up your navigation menu, and they will find what they are looking for much faster, which may lead to them becoming your client!
